The legalise on a website and information about legalise sounds stuffy I'm afraid, but stick with it, because it's the salt and pepper needed for every website served up on the Internet.

Generally speaking a disclaimer is any statement intended to specify or delimit the scope of rights and obligations that may be exercised and enforced by parties in a legally-recognised relationship. The term disclaimer usually implies situations that involve some level of uncertainty, waiver or risk.

The primary reason for an online business publishing a website disclaimer is to limit, or attempt to limit the liabilities that may arise from the website. If you are in any doubt as to what the disclaimer should include for your business, then you should seek professional, legal advice. Free disclaimer templates are available on the Internet, but read the small print - the devil is in the detail as they say. For example, shouting in CAPITAL LETTERS is normally considered 'rude' on the web, but can be a legal requirement in some countries. Many US-based web publishers use capital letters in their legal documents.

Each and every website publisher should publish a website disclaimer. Typically in my Website Content Briefs, I include as standard content for the footer four elements: Copyright, Privacy Policy, Disclaimer and Site Map.
What's Included in A Web Disclaimer
Typically a Web site disclaimer will state:
- Who the publisher or owner of the Web site is
- Which website site is being referred to
- What liability is accepted or not accepted by the website publisher / owner
- The website owner's policy regarding advertising and third party websites and links accessible via their website
